The James Webb Space Telescope has made a groundbreaking discovery, observing at least five galaxies merging approximately 800 million years after the Big Bang. This finding challenges the conventional understanding of the early universe, which was thought to be simpler and more orderly.
In a study published in Nature Astronomy on August 15, 2025, Weida Hu and colleagues detailed their observations, suggesting that the early universe was already complex and mature, contrary to existing models.
These collisions not only highlight the dynamic nature of the early cosmos but also indicate that heavy elements were being flung into space much earlier than scientists had anticipated.
